PROFILE: Dr. (Mrs.) Sulbha khanna

Sulbha Khanna has vast and varied experience as a development consultant. She has worked with several national and international organizations, NGOs and donor agencies. These include DFID, World Bank, CIDA, Save the Children, Aga Khan Foundation, UNFPA, BAIF, SEWA, UNIFEM, XIM, and IIMs. She worked as head of the Research and Monitoring unit in AKRSP (I) [Aga Khan Rural Support programme (India)] from 1994 to 2000. She was with the department of Geography of Gujarat University, from 1987-94, where she did her post doctorate on "Decision Making Process of Farmers in Commercial and Traditional Agriculture in Gujarat". Later she worked on a project "Management of Land Resources through Geographical information system" sponsored by the department of science and technology. Dr. Sulbha Khanna was also involved in teaching at M.A. level. She was awarded Ph.D. in 1984 on planning Agriculture market Systems in India. She has also done her Master of Professional Studies in 1981-'82 in 'International Agriculture and Rural Development' from Cornell University, USA on Ford Foundation scholarship.
Sulbha started her career in 1976 with the institute of regional analysis, Bhopal. India. Last position held was a project coordinator and director of rural development and action research-cum-demonstration cell. She is one of the founder members and currently the Chairperson of SIRDI, a grass root level rural development organization in central India. She is also Member Board of Governors of Institute of Regional Analysis since 1980.
Dr. Sulbha Khanna has authored four books; (1) New Horizons of Rural Development: Planning for the Poor, 1982 (co-author), (2) Planning for Sustainable Agricultural Development, 1995, (3) Rural Development Strategies and Planning, 2003 (co-author), (4) Participatory Approach to Development: Policies, Process and Performance, 2006
She has been a visiting faculty at National Institutes, such as Xavier Institute of Management, Centre for Planning and Architecture, National Institute of Design, Gujarat University, and Gujarat Vidhyapith. Dr. Sulbha Khanna looks forward to share her rich experience and insights gained in the period of over 25 years of working with the development project groups and Institutions.
